September 2025 cohort now enrolling — government-funded training for eligible learners. Apply today
Three nationally recognised pathways in hair and barbering, government-funded and delivered in partnership with real salons across Bedfordshire and the East of England.
Every programme is delivered on the employer's premises, with PLUMS coaches visiting regularly to assess progress, deliver off-the-job learning and prepare learners for End-Point Assessment.
The foundation programme for anyone entering the hairdressing profession. Learners develop the full technical skill set required to work safely and competently on a salon floor — from basic cuts to colour application and chemical treatments.
EPA is conducted by an Ofqual-regulated Organisation — either VTCT/NCFE or City & Guilds. It comprises a practical observation, professional discussion and an employer reference. Grades available: Pass, Merit and Distinction.
The progression route for qualified hairdressers who want to develop advanced technical skills — including creative cutting, complex colour work such as balayage and ombre, and session and photographic styling.
EPA includes a creative hair up-do or colour practical, a professional discussion portfolio review and an employer reference. Grades: Pass, Merit and Distinction. Distinction holders are typically recruited to senior or creative director roles.
A dedicated programme for the fast-growing barbering sector, covering the full range of barbering services from skin fades and clipper work to wet shaving and traditional straight-razor techniques.
EPA comprises a barbering practical (two client services observed simultaneously), a professional discussion and employer reference. Grades: Pass, Merit and Distinction. All EPA conducted by VTCT/NCFE or City & Guilds.
From first contact to your End-Point Assessment certificate, here is what the journey looks like with PLUMS as your training provider.
Contact PLUMS. We discuss your goals, confirm eligibility and, if needed, help you find a suitable salon employer willing to take you on as an apprentice.
You, your employer and PLUMS all sign an Apprenticeship Agreement and Individual Learning Plan. Funding is confirmed with the ESFA and your ILR record is created.
Your Skills Coach visits your workplace regularly — typically every 4 to 6 weeks — to deliver learning, assess evidence and track progress against the standard.
When you and your employer confirm you are ready, a Gateway Review is completed. You must have achieved all mandated off-the-job hours and any co-requisite qualifications.
An independent EPA Organisation assesses your competence. On achievement you receive your nationally recognised apprenticeship certificate and qualification grade.
All PLUMS apprenticeship programmes lead to qualifications awarded by Ofqual-regulated bodies. City & Guilds and VTCT/NCFE are the two most widely recognised awarding organisations in the UK hair and beauty sector.
Not necessarily. We actively work with partner salons across Bedfordshire and can help match suitable candidates with willing employers. If you already have a salon role, even better — we just need your employer to sign the Apprenticeship Agreement before training begins.
Yes — if you have been employed in your current role for less than 12 months and it is directly relevant to the apprenticeship standard, you may be eligible. We will assess your prior learning and experience at the initial assessment stage and credit any relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours already demonstrated.
Off-the-job training is at least 6 hours per week of structured learning that takes place away from your normal day-to-day salon duties. This is counted during working hours and covers theory lessons, practice on models, manufacturer training days, skills coach visits and any mandatory coursework. We help your employer plan and record this properly using our digital portfolio system.
Nothing. Apprenticeship training costs are paid by the government and the employer — never by the learner. Learners receive a wage (minimum wage rules apply), and any English and Maths Functional Skills support is also funded. There are no course fees, exam fees or material costs charged to the learner.
You can resit. There is no cap on the number of attempts, though a minimum waiting period of one month is required between attempts. PLUMS provides targeted support and practice sessions before any resit. The vast majority of our learners pass at the first attempt — our 2023/24 EPA first-attempt pass rate was 94%.
Yes — and this is the most common route. After completing Hair Professional L2 and gaining at least 12 months' post-qualification experience, you can apply for the Advanced Creative Hair L3 programme. Your existing PLUMS Skills Coach relationship continues and there is no gap in support.
Complete a short enquiry form and a member of our team will confirm which programme is right for you — usually within one working day.
